Breathlessness Intervention Service (BIS)

Addenbrooke's services

"Breathing problems are very common in people who have heart and lung conditions or some types of cancer. Breathlessness is disabling, frightening and distressing for all concerned.

"The good news is that there are several interventions (things) that can help, and this specialist Breathlessness Intervention Service (BIS) can help you and your family live more easily with your breathing problems."

Patients' words

The action plan is really good because it helps me to focus, helps me to calm it [the breathlessness] all down

I know it’s not going to kill me, however bad it gets, and that helps me to make it better, to calm my breathing down

it was about 3am in the morning, it was getting really bad, and I tried the breathing exercises, and they work, they really worked

I realise that..talking it through..it [the breathlessness] won’t go away, but I have ways that I can manage it

I feel so much better; all of this has made such a difference. It feels so good to go out and to be able to do things without having to worry about my breathing

I have learned to completely switch off and relax

I do get uptight at times but I deal with it much better now, I also feel much calmer in general

I felt so frustrated all the time because I could not do anything that I enjoyed

The breathlessness does not hold me back as much as it did

I can help with the house work now, I do the dusting, and he does the Hoover

Talking to you, I got over my frustration

I never wanted to go out, now I don’t mind, I actually enjoy it, just because my breathing does not get so much in the way

You have taken away the fear that she had of her future

That little fan is a real blessing, it really helps you when you get stuck
