Old equipment will save
hundreds of lives abroad

08 August, 2008

A consignment of the hospital's old beds has been handed over to a charity which refurbishes used medical equipment and ships it out to the developing world.

Aid to Hospitals Worldwide – known as A2HW – collected three lorry-loads of equipment that would otherwise have been scrapped. The charity has a team of volunteers at its headquarters in Bury St Edmunds who repair donations before supplying them free of charge to hospitals in countries like Zambia, Romania, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Consignment reaches Gambia

Vicki Sawford, Addenbrooke's Environmental Services Manager, said: “We are planning to make this a regular event. Disposing of old equipment without sending it for scrap has always been difficult – so if we can recycle it by finding it a good home then everybody benefits. We've handed over 26 beds, eight maternity delivery couches, and some cots, and it's good to know that they'll be put to good use by people in need."

Mike Coleman, Chief Executive of A2HW, said: “This equipment will save hundreds of lives. We are delighted that Addenbrooke's and Addenbrooke's Abroad have joined us in supplying medical aid to the developing world. These donations will make a considerable difference to both the quality and quantity of aid we will be able to supply."
