Addenbrooke's and the Rosie have paid tribute to the dedicated volunteers who generously give up their time to make life easier for patients and their families.
As part of National Volunteers' Week, some of our longest-serving volunteers – who have a total of nearly 400 years' service between them – attended a special lunchtime reception at the hospital today to recognise their work. Dr Mary Archer, the hospital's Chairman, presented awards for five, 10, 15 and 20 years' service.
Suzanne Rigby-Jones, Voluntary Services Manager, said: “We have over 700 volunteers, who carry out a wide range of tasks as well as visiting patients who need some company. They make a huge difference to the hospital, and we're delighted that so many people are prepared to give up their time to help. This is our chance to thank the longest-serving volunteers, but everyone is important – and we're extremely grateful to all of them."
Those receiving awards included volunteers from oncology, emergency services, the Lewin Stroke and Rehab Unit, the chaplaincy, and the 'Pets as Therapy' team. There were also newspaper delivery volunteers, guides and welcomers, volunteer ward assistants, and many more. One volunteer from Radio Addenbrooke's has been working at the station for 35 years.
