With the aim of personalising the act of remembrance and bringing World War One vividly alive in the present, it will encourage individuals and families to look into the stories of their relatives that lived in the First World War through a variety of activities.
At the outbreak of war in August 1914 many of the medical staff of Addenbrooke’s Hospital were already committed to serve on the staff of the First Eastern General Hospital and some of the nursing staff were consigned to this Hospital or to other nursing units.
As well as the Military Hospital built south of Burrell’s Walk in Cambridge, Addenbrooke’s also admitted war wounded. The Hospital Archives have the in-patient registers for this period so it is possible to find details of military personnel admitted. The Archives has many photographs of staff and military patients as well as other ephemera relating to the First Eastern General Hospital. The Archives will have a display of some of the material and staff and volunteers will also be available to give advice on how to trace your military ancestors.
Do you have an ancestor who served in the First World War? Many of the surviving Army Records are now available to search on-line.
To find out more about the on-line records, and to see the material held in the Archives of Addenbrooke’s Hospital please visit the display in the Hospital Concourse.
Find out more about the events of the Great War on the BBC website through the WW1 timeline and footage.
