New ward to be opened

26 September, 2008

A new ward is to be officially opened at Addenbrooke’s.

Two services have expanded into D6 ward creating space for extra beds and an improved level of specialist care.

The ward will be opened by two special guests - long-serving nurse Barbara Nierinck and patient Dianne Stracy. Barbara, a ward sister, has worked at Addenbrooke’s since 1974 - the opening ceremony will be among her final duties before retiring. Dianne is a haematology patient and an active fundraiser.

D6, which has housed a number of other departments in the past, has been given a full refurbishment. There will be 11 new haematology beds – making 27 available overall for haematology and oncology. Neuro sciences grows by 16 beds, giving the department a total of 117 across the hospital.

So far, 27 extra staff have been recruited for D6, which officially opens on Monday, September 29 at 9.30am.

Clare Wilks, ward manager, said: “It’s been a longstanding goal of both departments to grow. It’s been a great team effort to provide this expanded, specialist service for patients."
