5 October, 2009

For visitors

  • if you have flu-like symptoms, please do not visit the hospital

  • children should not visit unless it is essential.

We are taking these precautions to help prevent the spread of swine flu to our patients, visitors and staff.

For outpatients

If you feel poorly with flu-like symptoms just before you are due to come into hospital, please contact your clinic to discuss if we need to re-arrange your outpatient appointment. Children should not visit unless it is essential.

For inpatients

If you feel poorly with flu-like symptoms just before you are due to come into hospital for your admission, please contact us (refer to the contact details on your admission letter) to discuss if we need to re-arrange your procedure/operation. Children should not visit unless it is essential.

For staff

> Swine flu …information for staff

Please do not attend our Emergency Department if you are experiencing flu-like symptoms.

If you have flu-like symptoms:

  • contact the National Pandemic Flu Service on 0800 1 513 100 or visit www.direct.gov.uk/pandemicflu
This is a dedicated website and phoneline for people to check their symptoms and get access to antivirals if necessary.
If you have swine flu symptoms the National Pandemic Flu Service will give you a unique number and tell you where your nearest antiviral collection point is. You should then ask a 'flu friend' – a friend or relative who doesn’t have swine flu – to pick up your antivirals.

  • or telephone your GP if you are pregnant, have a serious health condition, have a sick child under a year old or your illness suddenly deteriorates.

Catch it, bin it, kill it

  • germs spread easily so please carry tissues and use them to catch your cough or sneeze

  • dispose of dirty tissues as soon as possible

  • clean your hands thoroughly and regularly with soap and water or alcohol hand gel (Spirigel).
