Outreach: Delivering cancer treatment efficiently in the community or hospital

22 June, 2009

Outreach patient

Delivering cancer treatment efficiently is becoming a big problem in the NHS: cancer is being diagnosed more often, while new developments in treatment mean that more patients than ever before are being referred for treatment.

We are reviewing our traditional ways of delivering cancer treatments and considering alternative, new approaches.

We have developed a new team to deliver cancer treatment to patients in the community: either in homes or in designated GP surgery outreach units.

What is Outreach?

It is a trial designed to compare delivery of cancer treatment in different locations: hospital day unit, patient’s home and GP Surgery

Who can take part?

Any patient receiving cancer treatment at Addenbrooke’s hospital (Cambridge) and West Suffolk hospital (Bury St Edmunds).

Why do a trial?

Treatment in the community may provide benefits to patients and their families, such as convenience and less interruption with daily life. The trial is designed to confirm if this is really the case.

Is it safe?

All treatment is being overseen by our specialist cancer doctors and delivered by our specialist cancer nurses, fully trained to give treatment in the community.

This unique trial – the first of its kind - has been awarded national funding and has full ethical approval

Would you like to take part in Outreach?

If you are interested, please let your team know. They will talk to you in more detail about the study and provide you with written information to take away and think about.
