Addenbrooke's doctors believe they may soon have a cure for peanut allergies.

The largest ever trial to find a treatment for the potentially fatal condition will give patients tiny amounts of peanut flour to build up tolerance. Dr Andrew Clark and his team will give slowly increasing doses to 104 children, up to the equivalent of five nuts a day. Sufferers in an earlier study became able to eat more than 30 peanuts safely.
"This is going to be the largest trial of its kind in the world, and it should give us a definitive idea of whether the approach works and whether it's safe," said Dr Clark.
The new £1 million three-year trial, which is funded by the National Institute of Health Research, does not need any more volunteer patients – but it could lead to treatment being available within two to three years.
