Karen Goldstone, the physicist who ran the East Anglian Regional Radiation Protection Service (EARRPS) at Addenbrooke's for 25 years, received an MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours List for her services to healthcare.

Karen said: "I'm very surprised to be honoured like this -- I thought I was just doing my job. Really this honour is just as much about the fantastic  team of people I work with.”

Karen retired as Head of EARRPS at the end of August 2009, but is still working with the service in a part-time consultancy role. Current head if service, Stuart Yates said: “We are delighted that Karen has been honoured in this way. Her commitment to the service has always gone over and above the call of duty, and her support for us as individuals over the past 25 years has been highly valued.”

The EARRPS advises on the safe use of all forms of radiation. Their work primarily includes X-rays and radioactivity but also covers lasers, electromagnetic radiation and ultrasound. EARRPS co-ordinates the legally required radiation protection work throughout the region and promotes the understanding of current legislation and best practice.
