Addenbrooke’s and the Rosie are looking for health cadets – a new route into the NHS for people who want to take the first steps towards a career in healthcare.
The health cadet scheme offers 12 weeks of work experience and on-the-job training, based in wards, clinics, laboratories and support services. On successful completion, cadets will have a guaranteed place on the hospital’s thriving apprenticeship programme as well as the opportunity to gain an accredited qualification.
Linda Hering, employee development manager, said: “If you’re interested in a career in healthcare then this could be the ideal first step, even if you’ve only just got your exam results.
“Our health cadet scheme gives you the chance to find out if this kind of job is right for you. You’ll be helping our patients and doing practical activities right from the start, with plenty of training and support to get you used to the hospital and the world of work.
“We hope that many of our recruits will stay with us after the three month cadet period, progressing to the remaining nine months of apprenticeship, and then continuing to build a rewarding career at Addenbrooke’s and the Rosie.”
Apprentices work right across the hospitals. Likely positions include working on the wards as a healthcare assistant – or behind the scenes as a sterile services technician, laboratory technician or pharmacy technician. Apprentices also work as part of the estates and facilities department. Cadets will receive an allowance of £30 a week during their first three months, and will be in training for a minimum of two days per week. As an apprentice, the salary rises to £100 a week for the next six months and £120 a week for the final three months.
