The C&D lift lobby area is looking a lot brighter following the installation of artwork by Raphael Daden.
The four large artworks consist of different colours of acrylic pieces which are lit from within creating an unusual and vibrant display.
The acrylic artwork is lit from within.
The artworks have been commissioned as part of the development of the new Intensive Care Unit at the centre of Addenbrooke's Hospital. The project has been funded by the 'Percent for Art' scheme, which diverts a small amount of money from building projects into artwork as part of the planning permission process.
As part of the ICU development windows in the C&D lift lobby area had to be blocked out leaving this very busy thoroughfare without natural daylight. The four new artworks bring brightness, light and a touch of the outdoors into this area.
Raphael has drawn inspiration from the flow of water from Nine Wells (just to the south of the campus) into Cambridge along Hobson's Conduit.
He says: "I want people to be able to stop for a moment in this busy environment and to be absorbed into the work, using light, colour and patterns from the natural world."
Along with Raphael's artwork a number of other improvements are being carried out to the area including redecoration of the C&D staircase and the hanging of new paintings by local artist Jo Tunmer and the installation of glass art by Charlotte Garrard in the doors of the new ICU and HDU wards.
All the work is expected to be completed by Christmas.
