Partnership brings hearing aid services closer to home

24 January 2011

CUH is working in partnership with Hinchingbrooke Healthcare NHS Trust and Specsavers to bring hearing aid services closer to home.

The Cambridgeshire Adult Hearing Service will provide easily accessible hearing services in Cambridgeshire from 01 April, for patients over 50 years of age with 'age related' hearing impairment.

NHS Cambridgeshire awarded the contract to the new partnership following a consultation in 2010 to find out what patients wanted from a local hearing service. Over 1,000 people responded and said the new services should include:

  • More regular local services
  • Appointments at flexible times
  • Shorter waiting times for appointments
  • Replacement hearing aid batteries available locally

This unique new structure sees the NHS working with an independent provider in a partnership working closely with GPs and emerging GP Consortia to deliver the best service for patients.

Dr David Baguley, Head of Audiology at Addenbbrooke's said: "We are really delighted to be working with our partners on this service which will build on existing experience and expertise to provide a more responsive service for patients - more convenient, easier to use and with improved access across the community."

The partnership will build on the existing service to improve access for all patients by bringing services closer to home with more clinics, including high street locations. Patients will be able to speak to a dedicated hearcare team 365-days-a-year on a freephone number or be referred to the service by their local GP.

The Cambridgeshire Adult Hearing Service will be supported by Cambridge CAMTAD (Campaign for Tackling Acquired Deafness) Fenland CAMTAD and CAMTAD in Hunts, supplying NHS batteries, a hearing aid maintenance service and advice on hearing loss locally.
