Cambridge University Hospitals is top hospital in Midlands and East Anglia

Cambridge University Hospitals – the NHS Foundation Trust which runs Addenbrooke’s and the Rosie Hospitals – has been identified as the top hospital in the Midlands and East Anglia.

 

The award – from independent health research organisation Dr Foster Intelligence – is based on the Trust’s safety record and on patients’ opinions of their care. Only four hospitals have been given the title ‘Trust of the Year’, one in each of the four new NHS regions.

 

Dr Foster’s analysis examined HSMR (hospital standardised mortality ratio) and SHMI (summary hospital-level mortality indicator )results, which are statistical methods for measuring how likely patients are to die at a particular hospital. They also looked at responses to the national NHS inpatient survey. The key questions asked whether patients were treated with dignity and respect, and whether they were involved in decisions about their care. Addenbrooke’s and the Rosie scored well on both.

 

Dr Gareth Goodier, chief executive of Cambridge University Hospitals, said: “I am very proud of this result because there is no subjectivity in the choice of winners – the award is based solely upon the evidence of our low mortality rates and the national inpatient survey results. My thanks go to the great team of professionals at Addenbrooke’s and the Rosie for the hard work and dedication that lies behind this success.
