About the ward
The Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Facility is a joint venture between the Wellcome Trust, Addenbrooke's and the University of Cambridge.
It is one of two wards of the Addenbrooke's Clinical Research Centre (ACRC), which is housed in the Addenbrooke's Centre for Clinical Investigation (ACCI) building.
The ACRC offers two purpose-built research facilities to members of the local research community for patient-centred clinical research projects. Both areas are staffed by experienced, well-qualified NHS staff who have a range of acute, critical care and research skills.
The CRF currently operates over 24 hours Monday to Friday (four days, four nights) with additional overnight and weekend availability negotiable with the Lead Research Nurse/Ward Manager.
Finding the Clinical Research Facility
The Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Facility (CRF) is located on Level 5 of the Addenbrooke's Centre for Clinical Investigation (ACCI). The ACCI is linked to the rest of the hospital via the 'clown corridor', which runs between the concourse and the Rosie Hospital.
Ward facilities
The facilities offered by the CRF include:
Eight inpatient beds
Three outpatient rooms
Two investigation rooms
Laboratory and tissue culture facilities
Audiology soundproofed room
Body composition measurement
IT facilities
Human performance testing
Ultrasonography and ophthalmology suite
Who can use the CRF?
Any member of the local research community who holds an honorary contract with Addenbrooke's can use the facilities of the Centre. This includes physicians, nurses and therapists. The research projects must be patient or volunteer based, protocol driven and have approval from the local research committee. The research focus of the CRF is largely for investigator-led clinical research projects; however, applications for industry-sponsored projects will be considered.
