We provide care for children attending hospital for medical or surgical day case procedures with the aim of discharge home the same day. We also see children attending as ward attenders for minor tests, cannulation, pre-operative clinics and reviews.

Opening hours
Our service currently runs from 07.30am until 7.00pm, Monday to Friday. Outside of these hours the telephone system is diverted to ward D2, a children’s ward where you can get advice and support if necessary.
On your arrival:
Your allocated nurse will show you around the ward and ask for information about your child to enable them to care for your child appropriately. You will be given the opportunity to ask questions at any time throughout your child’s stay. If your child is admitted for a day case procedure, they will be allocated a bed space so you can begin to make yourself and your child comfortable.
Visiting hours:
We operate an open visiting policy for parents, carers and close relatives, which means that within unit opening hours, family members are able to visit your child at any time.
To help us prevent the spread of any infections, please ask visitors to use the hand rub at the entrance to the ward on arrival and on leaving.
Food and drink:
We provide snack boxes at meal times if your child has been admitted as a day case. The snack boxes include sandwiches, crisps, muffin, yoghurt and juice. We also have toast, fruit and a variety of cereals available. We have a limited range of baby foods and milk available if required.
If your child has any special dietary requirements, please discuss this with your allocated nurse on arrival.
For safety reasons, if you want to have hot drinks please take them into the parent and teenage waiting area and take care not to leave them unattended.
Ward facilities
Plan of the day
Following admission, your allocated nurse will complete some paperwork checking details with you. Following this they will take and record your child’s pulse rate, temperature, breathing rate and weight. These are important measurements to ensure that your child is fit and healthy for the procedure and as a baseline prior to undertaking any procedure or investigations.
The doctors (both medical and surgical specialities) and anaesthetist (if necessary) will then visit you and your child on the ward and complete the consent form outlining the procedure to be undertaken, having fully explained everything to you. This will give you the opportunity to ask questions regarding the procedure. When your allocated theatre slot is ready, the porters will arrive on the unit to collect your child and take them to theatre, along with a member of staff from the unit. One parent is allowed into the anaesthetic room in addition to the nurse, and can comfort your child whilst they are given the anaesthetic. The nurses will then take you to the recovery area where you will receive a pager so that they can contact you when your child is waking up. This allows you to be able to get some food and a drink whilst your child is in theatre.
