If an angiogram shows areas of narrowing in your coronary arteries, an angioplasty may be performed.
An angioplasty treats the narrowing in your coronary arteries by inflating a balloon at the tip of a catheter to gently squash the fatty plaques against the coronary artery wall and therefore allowing the blood supply to flow more freely through the coronary artery to the heart muscle. A stainless steel mesh called a 'stent' will be placed in the area where the fatty plaques have been treated to ensure that the coronary artery stays open.
Angioplasty is not currently undertaken at Addenbrooke’s Hospital. Most patients go to Papworth Hospital for this procedure.
