Cardiac rehabilitation programme

Cardiac Rehabilitation Service

The first contact after your discharge is a cardiac rehabilitation clinic appointment. This is approximately three weeks after discharge, and is your opportunity to discuss your progress and recovery with one of the specialist nurses. You will usually have the date and time of this appointment before you are discharged.

You will then be invited to attend the weekly cardiac rehabilitation programme at one of four venues in a location, and a day, that best suits you.

Day Location
Monday Ely
Tuesday Addenbrooke’s Hospital
Wednesday Buchan Street - Arbury (North Cambridge)
Thursday Sawston (South West Cambridge)

After a cardiac event most people are ready to start a programme after approximately four to eight weeks.

Exercise program

The cardiac rehab team will discuss the safe and appropriate time for you to start attending the rehabilitation programme. You may start talks as soon as you fell well enough. You will be with a group of up to 15 people (aged between 20 and 90) who have also had a cardiac event.

Each week an exercise specialist and nurse will deliver a programme of education, advice and support on all aspects of your recovery. You will be given the most up to date information and have the opportunity to discuss your progress. You may also have the opportunity to take part in supervised exercise sessions.

You are welcome to bring your partner, or a friend, to the education session if you wish.

The exercise sessions however are for patients only.

We know from research that following cardiac rehabilitation, people are able to do more, feel more confident, feel less stressed and enjoy a healthier lifestyle. The things you do can make a very big difference to your recovery. It is possible to improve how well your heart works and to reduce your risk of having another cardiac event. The rehabilitation team is here to help you make the best recovery you can.
