Criteria for hereditary diffuse gastric cancer (HDGC) study

Familial gastric cancer study

Criteria:

  • Any family with two or more documented cases of diffuse gastric cancer in first or second degree relatives, with one at least one diagnosed before the age of 50.

  • Three or more documented cases of diffuse gastric cancer in first or second degree relatives, diagnosed in any age.

  • Any individual diagnosed with diffuse gastric cancer before the age of 40 without a family history.

  • Individuals and families diagnosed with both diffuse gastric cancer and lobular breast cancer (including one before the age of 50 years).

If necessary, the research team will seek confirmation of cancer pathologies.

 

Please note: The criteria for the study are very specific. If you have a family history of gastric cancer, it does not necessarily mean you have a ‘faulty gene’ If you are concerned you are advised to discuss with your GP in the first instance.

 

 

Second part of the study

 

This is concerned with families in which a ‘faulty gene’ (mutation) has been identified.

 

The study aims to assess the physical and psychological implications of having a genetic test and the effect on the individual’s quality of life opting for prophylactic surgery or regular endoscopies has.
