The familial gastric cancer study aims to identify new gastric cancer predisposing genes and to improve the treatment and management of individuals with an inherited predisposition to gastric cancer.

The study was set up in 1997 by Professor Carlos Caldas to collect information and blood samples from families with clustered cases of gastric cancer from the UK. The study is funded by a grant to Professor Caldas from Cancer Research UK

Dr Rebecca Fitzgerald, Honorary Consultant Gastroenterologist is Principal Investigator on the study. Her main area of interest is the endoscopic surveillance of patients at high risk of developing gastric cancer.

Individuals who consent to join the study are asked to provide details of their family history of cancer. We then attempt to confirm all the cancer cases in the family. Any information obtained about the pathology in family members is relayed to the Genetic Department to help with their clinical management. Blood samples are obtained from family members and are stored for DNA analysis.

Results from the research laboratory are fed back to Genetic Departments and results are verified by testing fresh samples in a clinical laboratory.
