The John Farman Intensive Care Unit is a specialised section of the hospital containing the equipment, medical and nursing staff, and monitoring devices necessary to provide intensive care for critically ill patients.

Who was John Farman?

Our unit was named in memory of John Vernon Farman, who was a consultant anaesthetist at Addenbrooke's between 1966 and the year of his sudden and unexpected death in 1988.

John FarmanHe was a founding member of the Intensive Care Society and had an international reputation for his two very disparate interests: anaesthetic techniques for developing countries and anaesthesia for liver transplantation. He wrote many papers, several books and was also an enthusiastic teacher.

Directions to the ICU

Location

The John Farman Intensive Care Unit is located at the far end of Ward D3, which is on Level 3 of the main Addenbrooke’s building.

From the main hospital concourse (which is on Level 2 of the building), cross the link corridor (passing the hairdressers on your left) and take a lift to Level 3 (or the stairs next to them) to the third floor. Turn left out of the lift on Level 3, and Ward D3 is through the first set of double doors on your right.

Ward security

For the security of both patients and staff, the doors to Ward D3 are always locked. To enter, ring the buzzer labelled ‘ICU’ on the intercom (situated at shoulder height on the left hand side of the door). Wait for someone to reply, and tell them you are a relative/friend of a patient on ICU.

The door is controlled by ICU staff, who can see you on a closed-circuit TV. Note, staff of Ward D3 are not responsible for letting you in. Sometimes you will need to be patient, it can take some time for a member of the ICU staff to let you in because they might be busy looking after patients or talking to relatives.

Proceed through Ward D3 to the far end of the corridor, and through the first set of doors at the end to the entrance foyer of the Intensive Care Unit. Here, you will find another bell. Please ring this bell and wait to be attended to by a member of the ICU staff. Tell the member of staff who you are and which patient you are visiting. The member of staff will then check to see if it is convenient, and will either ask you to wait until you are called in the Visitors’ Room or will welcome you in.
