Who should be referred for investigation to exclude immunodeficiency?

The main feature of an immunodeficiency is susceptibility to infections.
People with any of the following may ask their GP for a referral to our clinic.

  • Recurrent infections - including chest infections, abscesses

  • Persistent infections, i.e. infections that do not resolve despite taking appropriate therapy

  • Severe infections which need hospital treatment, and especially treatment with intravenous antibiotics

  • Unusual infections caused by poorly pathogenic organisms e.g persistent oral candida (thrush) in an adult without predisposing factors, pneumocystis pneumonia etc

  • Family history of a known immunodeficiency, or several family members suffering from susceptibility to infection
