Mechanical Engineering

Clinical Engineering

In conjunction with our Surgical Instruments sub-section, we repair and manufacture a range of mechanically-based equipment for the Trust and for other healthcare providers in the area.

Our work includes:

  • Service and repair to mechanical devices

  • Manufacture of specialist parts no longer available elsewhere

  • Routine service and sharpening of surgeons' instruments

  • Manufacture of instruments not commercially available

  • Maintenance of air mattress systems for bed sore prevention

  • Technical advice to users and investigation of failures

  • Project design and development of treatment and measurement devices as requested by clinicians for their specialty

  • Mercury decontamination and monitoring (click here for information on Safety and Mercury)

  • Sphygmomanometer repairs and recalibration

We are particularly practiced at making aids for people with physical disabilities - for example a leg-brace for children with cerebral palsy.  This displaces the hip joint following orthopaedic surgery, keeping it correctly aligned.

We work closely with the Medical Electronics section in adapting or building equipment that patients can use in their own homes.

The technicians in this division develop custom-built medical devices, which are used either in surgery or research, or for the rehabilitation of patients. Examples include developing hip braces for children with cerebral palsy, specially designed syringes for use in ophthalmic surgery, and basic modifications to everyday items such as combs, cutlery and even toys, for disabled patients to use at home.

Surgical Instruments

We also have a specialised Surgical Instruments Workshop where we maintain and repair a wide variety of surgical and medical devices. Our service also includes engraving of signs and plaques, and etching of stainless steel surgical instruments.

We are a sub-section of Mechanical Engineering specialising in the following:

  • Air mattress repairs and testing

  • Sphygmomanometer repairs and recalibration

  • Surgical instrument repairs and sharpening

  • Mercury decontamination and monitoring

  • Engraving of special badges and boards
