MRI Physics

Medical Physics

The MR Physics and Informatics Division has scientific and managerial responsibility to both the Department of Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering (Dr. P. Jarritt) and the Department of Radiology (Mrs E. Hunt) as well as the University Department of Radiology (Prof. D.J. Lomas). The Division's mission statement is to provide expertise in all aspects of Magnetic Resonance Physics and Informatics to the Trust and also to external organisations with which we have service level agreements. In addition to providing support to the routine delivery of MRI services to four 1.5T and one 3.0T MRI scanners, the division also provides support to translational research activities. This has been a particularly challenging year given the major rebuilding of the MRIS Unit whilst continuing to provide a comprehensive imaging service.

The Division is staffed by three state registered physicists; Martin Graves, Richard Black and Dr. Andrew Priest.

Teaching and training

The Division provides Part I training in MR Physics and formal lectures in both basic and advanced MR techniques, and PACS, to both first and second year FRCR candidates. We have organised a regional MRI safety course held locally. A number of invited talks have also been given. The Division contributed several talks and practical sessions to the acquaintanceship in ICT, provided to IPEM Part 1 trainees. We have previously organised several semi-annual collaborative scientific meetings that have had the participation of many local groups involved in medical imaging research, both clinical and academic.
