Why do I keep thinking about sex?

SHAC - Sexual Health Advice Centre

We are all surrounded by images and descriptions of sex in films, books, magazines, and on the TV. This can be quite fun, maybe in a comedy programme, or a bit threatening or even frightening. These images make us think about sex, maybe just for a moment or for longer and it can be embarrassing if you see sexual images when you are with other people. Many think it would be better for us all if we talked about sex in a relaxed way, but don't worry if you are embarrassed.

Sometimes you will think about sex for no apparent reason, or because you see someone that you feel attracted to. Having these fantasies about sex is very normal and not something to feel guilty or 'dirty' about. Fantasies are only harmful if they bother you of make you feel anxious.

Sexual images can be useful and pleasurable, the large number of sex shops, magazines and pornographic films which are available shows that it is very common for people to want to use and enjoy them. Some couples like to look at erotic material, magazines or videos, together during foreplay to help them get excited. If anything upsets you, don't buy or use the material.

If you have any worries about you or your partner thinking about sex, and the effect it has on you, do come and talk to a health advisor at SHAC (at Clinic 1A). Anything you tell us will be completely confidential.
