Corporate social responsibility

Our way … responsible for our staff, our environment and our communities

Cambridge University Hospitals is all about people – our patients, our staff, our partners and our local community - which is why good citizenship is a very important to us and why we are open, honest and accountable in our approach to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). We are committed to CSR and this is reflected in the way we work, the way we behave and the way we strive for excellence in all we do.

Our hospitals – Addenbrooke’s and the Rosie – are located on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus a 70 acre site to the south of Cambridge and we are very aware of the impact we have on the environment and our communities. For many years now we have been working in a sustainable way, such as improving energy efficiency, minimising waste, and promoting healthy and sustainable travel.

Our commitment is to improve the health and wellbeing of our communities (our patients, our staff, our partners and our local community), and to develop hospital and research facilities on our campus in a sustainable and environmentally friendly way.

To keep us focused and to measure our progress we are using a nationally recognised ‘Good Corporate Citizen’ assessment tool developed by The Sustainable Development Commission, the Government’s independent advisory body on sustainable development. This tool helps us to embrace sustainable development and tackle health inequalities through day-to-day business activities. It provides a basic set of criteria which an economically, socially and environmentally aware NHS organisation should implement. The Good Corporate Citizen assessment allows us to assess our achievements and to identify required actions.

These web pages have been developed around three key areas explaining our approach, commitment, challenges and achievements for delivering on our corporate social responsibility:

  1. Our staff
  2. Our environment
  3. Our patients, partners and communities

Have a look at the ‘Keeping us focused’ pages to see how we monitor our CSR performance and progress.
