Care Quality Commission statement of purpose

Declarations – our pledges to you

Introduction

Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust comprises Addenbrooke’s Hospital and the Rosie Hospital in Cambridge.  We also operate at other locations providing satellite and outreach services to meet the needs of patients.

The Trust provides accessible high-quality healthcare for the local people of Cambridge, together with specialist services, dealing with rare or complex conditions, for a regional, national and international population. The Trust is recognised as a centre of excellence and innovation with many of the hospital specialists being leaders in their field.

Services provided include emergency, surgical, medical, women’s and maternity services, paediatrics, specialist services such as liver transplantation, neurosciences, renal services, bone and marrow transplantation, cleft lip and palate reconstruction, treatment of rare cancers and medical genetics.

The Trust is internationally renowned for its partnership with the University of Cambridge and as a world-class centre for medical research.  The Trust works with a number of research partners, for example, the Medical Research Council (MRC), Cancer Research UK and The Wellcome Trust, to make the Cambridge Biomedical Campus an internationally leading centre for biomedical and translational research.

The Cambridge Biomedical Campus is set to double in size over the next 10 years. The development of the campus will allow for the integration of the three core activities of clinical care, research and teaching. In terms of clinical care, there will be new clinical facilities including a children’s hospital, expanded services for maternity, neurosciences and cancer, and the relocated Papworth Hospital. The development will provide facilities for the undertaking of large scale clinical research as well as the training of staff and others associated with delivering healthcare in combined facilities.

Our commitment to our patients and our community is as an open, accountable and responsive organisation that fosters patient and public involvement, which we consider is crucial to the development of a modern hospital fit for the 21st century.  The Trust achieved NHS Foundation Trust status in July 2004 and as such has a Board of Governors and a membership of approximately 23,000, comprising patients, staff and members of the public who are actively involved with the Trust in ensuring that our services reflect the needs of those using them.

The Trust has established key priorities which focus on providing a safe, equitable and quality service to our patients, staff and partners and specifically include:

  • improving the experience of patients
  • improving patient care and safety
  • ensuring clinical excellence and effectiveness
  • valuing our staff and partners
  • striving for innovation in all we do
Our behaviour, with patients and each other as colleagues, reflects the values staff and patients have identified as being central to our character as an organisation.  Our values are to be kind, safe and excellent.
