Non-executive director appointments at Cambridge University Hospitals

5 October, 2009

Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has announced the appointment of five non-executive directors, three of them newcomers to the board.

Professor Martin Bobrow and Jim Potter, both of whom have served as non-executive directors since 2004, have been reappointed for a final three-year term. They will be joined by:

  • Richard Barfield, who has worked as Chief Executive, Chairman or Finance Director of a range of companies including Spring Group plc – the UK’s largest listed IT staffing business (appointed from 1 October 2009)

  • Malcolm Nicholson, who was a partner in the leading law firm Slaughter and May for over 27 years and is now a panel member of the Competition Commission (appointed from 1 July 2010)

  • Professor Pat Troop, who recently retired as Chief Executive of the Health Protection Agency after a 35-year career in public health and healthcare that included five years as Deputy Chief Medical Officer of England (appointed from 1 October 2009)

All three will serve an initial term of three years and will receive a fee of £13,871 per year.

Dr Mary Archer, Chairman of Cambridge University Hospitals, said: “It is very pleasing that people with such distinguished careers in both the public and private sectors want to share their expertise with the Trust. Our non-executive directors are a strong team who work for the benefit of the hospitals, our staff, and our patients – and in these challenging times they will be instrumental in helping us take the organisation in the right direction. These appointments are good news for all of us at Addenbrooke’s and the Rosie.”

Non-executive directors sit on the Board of Directors, and are chosen because of their high-level experience and links with the local community. The Board of Directors determines the overall strategic direction of the Trust and is responsible for all operational and financial issues. As a foundation trust, Cambridge University Hospitals also has a Board of Governors, the majority of whom are elected by, and represent, members drawn from the community. As part of their role, the Governors appoint the chairman and non-executive directors.
