New Year honour for Richard Howe
Richard Howe, retired executive director at Cambridge University Hospitals, has been recognised in the New Year honours with an MBE for services to the NHS.
Professor Patrick Sissons, Regius Professor of Physic and Head of the School of Clinical Medicine, has been knighted "for services to research and education in Clinical Medicine".
Cambridge City Council has given formal planning consent for development of the Cambridge Biomedical Campus to go ahead.
Cambridge University Hospitals and its partners – Countryside Properties, Liberty Property Trust, the Medical Research Council and the University of Cambridge – can now begin the next stage of the site’s expansion, which will include the relocation of Papworth Hospital and will enhance Cambridge’s reputation as an international centre for patient care, biomedical research and education.
The Cambridge Biomedical Campus will cover 140 acres rather than the current 70 occupied by Addenbrooke’s and the Rosie, providing room for extensive new clinical facilities including Papworth, the children’s hospital, and expanded services for maternity, neurosciences, and cancer.
It will also include University of Cambridge facilities and research labs like the new Medical Research Council Laboratory of Molecular Biology, where world-class scientists can work to push back the boundaries of medical knowledge. The campus will be home to one of the largest and most internationally-competitive concentrations of health-related talent and enterprise in Europe.
Stephen Graves, Director of Corporate Development, said:
“We’re delighted that the City Council has given us permission to take this unique plan forward. Together with our partners, the expansion will put us at the forefront of institutions that combine excellent clinical care, teaching and research on one site. Our ambition is to become the best biomedical research centre in Europe, and I know that patients will benefit both from the new facilities and from the discoveries that will be made.”
