Ministerial visit to Cambridge University Hospitals

14 January, 2010

Ann Keen MP – Parliamentary Under Secretary for Health Services at the Department of Health, and a former nurse – has visited Addenbrooke’s and the Rosie to unveil a commemorative copy of the new NHS Constitution.

The Constitution establishes the principles and values of the NHS in England – first and foremost, that the health service belongs to everyone. For the first time in the history of the NHS, it brings together the rights of patients, public and staff in one place, and sets out the pledges which the NHS is committed to achieving. It also identifies the responsibilities which the public, patients and staff owe to one another to ensure that the NHS operates fairly and effectively.

All NHS bodies and private and third sector providers supplying NHS services will be required by law to take account of the Constitution in their decisions and actions.

Dr Gareth Goodier, Chief Executive of Cambridge University Hospitals, said: “We believe that everyone has a role to play in the success of the NHS, and we are honoured to host this copy of the NHS Constitution.

“At Addenbrooke’s and the Rosie we are working to live up to these commitments through our Our Way campaign. We have set out our vision for the future, our purpose and role as an NHS trust, our priorities for quality service, and our values – to be kind, safe, and excellent. These define the way we work and behave towards our patients, partners and each other.”

Ann Keen unveiled a permanent display in the main reception at Addenbrooke’s which includes a copy of the NHS Constitution signed by the Prime Minister and the Secretary of State for Health.

During her visit she also met Elizabeth Malubay, a healthcare assistant at Addenbrooke’s who was the overall winner of the hospital’s ‘You made a difference’ awards for 2009. Elizabeth has been nominated for an award by patients, colleagues, and members of the public every month since the scheme began.
