Trust's commitment to equality and diversity commended

01 April 2011

CUH's commitment to equality, diversity and human rights has been recognised following the completion of a year-long initiative designed to tackle discrimination.

The Trust was one of 26 from around the country selected to take part in the 2010/11 NHS Employers diversity partners programme, which supports trusts to embed good equality and diversity practice into their day to day business.

The initiative aimed to guide public policy, support minority groups and promote equality.

In recognition of its involvement, CUH has now been awarded "associate partner" status, and will be tasked with offering NHS Employers help and support on future consultations and policy issues.

Professor Carol Baxter, head of equality and diversity for the NHS Employers' organisation, said: "I am delighted that CUH has successfully completed the equality and diversity partners programme for 2010/11.

"The trust has shown great leadership and innovation in this area over the past year, not only working hard to promote good practice internally but also at a regional and national level to share that good work with others. This is a credit to the board and the staff involved in this work at a time of considerable change for the NHS."

Monica Jacot, HR project manager, said: "The year-long programme gave us the opportunity to further develop our equality and diversity strategy while sharing good practice and learning from our partners.

"We have also contributed to a number of national projects such as the consultation with Equality and Human Rights Commission and NHS Employers on guidance around the new Equality Act, and the NHS Equality and Diversity Council proposals for a new Equality and Delivery System. In return, NHS Employers has given us access to free training and seminars, from national organisations – such as Stonewall and the Employers Forum on Disability all of which has been incredibly useful in helping us further embed equality and diversity at CUH.

"We are really pleased to have been awarded associate partner status and look forward to continuing to promote good practice across the organisation."
