New role for Addenbrooke's chief executive
After nearly six years as chief executive, Dr Gareth Goodier will be leaving Cambridge University Hospitals in June 2012 having accepted a position in a major healthcare organisation in Australia.
Patients in the developing world are benefiting after a consignment of unwanted CUH stock was shipped out to equip a health clinic in Nigeria.
A total of six mattresses and various other equipment, including a drip stand, baby cot, drug cabinet, bedside cabinet and three blood pressure monitors, were transported to the Niger Delta by local charity New Foundations during January. The equipment, along with items donated by Perth Royal Infirmary, has made a real difference as previously the centre had only one bed, with other patients forced to use mattresses on the floor.
David Donovan, who runs New Foundations and is also a partner at the Lensfield Road Practice in Cambridge, said: "It's amazing how a simple telephone call can result in such timely and swift assistance.
Equipment on its way to the health clinic in Nigeria
"Victoria Sawford and the equipment management team responded so fast and positively that we could bring forward the proposed date of shipment. The equipment has been crucial in equipping our remote clinic base in Enekorogha, deep in the riverine system of the Niger Delta, and our sincere thanks go to all."
Vicki Sawford, environmental services manager with the Trust, said: "These valuable schemes are a fantastic way of putting our old equipment to good use, and enable us to recycle things which would otherwise be sent for scrap. We are really pleased to have been able to support a project which is making such a big difference to the lives of people using this clinic in the Niger Delta."
The project came in addition to the Trust's work with Aid to Hospitals Worldwide, through which regular donations of old but usable equipment are made to countries such as Zambia, Romania and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
