Cambridge University Hospitals is top hospital in Midlands and East Anglia

28 November 2011

Cambridge University Hospitals – the NHS Foundation Trust which runs Addenbrooke’s and the Rosie Hospitals – has been identified as the top hospital in the Midlands and East Anglia.

The award – from independent health research organisation Dr Foster Intelligence – is based on the Trust’s safety record and on patients’ opinions of their care. Only four hospitals have been given the title ‘Trust of the Year’, one in each of the four new NHS regions.

Dr Foster’s analysis examined HSMR (hospital standardised mortality ratio) and SHMI (summary hospital-level mortality indicator )results, which are statistical methods for measuring how likely patients are to die at a particular hospital. They also looked at responses to the national NHS inpatient survey. The key questions asked whether patients were treated with dignity and respect, and whether they were involved in decisions about their care. Addenbrooke’s and the Rosie scored well on both.

Dr Gareth Goodier, chief executive of Cambridge University Hospitals, said: “I am very proud of this result because there is no subjectivity in the choice of winners – the award is based solely upon the evidence of our low mortality rates and the national inpatient survey results. My thanks go to the great team of professionals at Addenbrooke’s and the Rosie for the hard work and dedication that lies behind this success.

“We are committed to putting patients first – and that means not only that their safety is paramount, but that we go out of our way to listen to their views both during their time at the hospital and after they go home. When things go wrong, we respond immediately to investigate and learn from events.

“For Addenbrooke’s and the Rosie – which, as specialist centres, see the sickest patients – the mortality rates are significantly better than elsewhere. That makes us the safest hospitals in the region, and among the safest in the NHS.”

Tim Baker, chief executive of Dr Foster Intelligence, said: “The Trust of the Year award recognises excellence in the NHS. It is important to identify hospitals where the evidence points to outstanding achievement, both in outcomes and in how patients rate their experience of care. To be named Dr Foster Trust of the year a trust has to perform highly on two important measures of hospital quality: mortality and patient experience. There can only be one winner for each of the new NHS regions. We congratulate Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust on their award this year.”

The NHS Midlands and East Anglia region was created in October 2011 and covers 15 million people from the borders of Wales, across the Midlands, to the coast of East Anglia.
