Region’s first NHS comprehensive assisted conception unit opens in Cambridge

Cambridge IVF – a new purpose-built assisted conception unit offering high-quality, personalised care based on the very latest science and research – has opened to patients.

 

The facility was developed by Cambridge University Hospitals to provide a range of fertility treatments to NHS patients from across the east of England. It also offers treatment – including IVF – to those funding their own care.

 

Based in a secluded location on the edge of the city in Trumpington, away from the main hospital site, the centre has been fitted with state-of-the-art equipment and facilities. It includes a theatre suite and recovery area, three scan and consultation rooms, laboratories, and private areas for counselling and confidential discussions. Designed as a modern but comfortable space, it will be staffed by an experienced and supportive team who can put people at ease and reduce any anxiety they may feel about receiving treatment.

 

Mr Raj Mathur, lead clinician, said: “Cambridge IVF is the first NHS comprehensive assisted conception unit in the east of England and is one of the most exciting developments in healthcare in our region. It is modern, bright and welcoming, and the building has been equipped with the latest technology. We will operate at the very highest safety standards.

 

“Although we are a new service, Cambridge IVF builds on our 20 years as a fertility treatment centre at Addenbrooke’s, and our experience of running a successful satellite IVF service in partnership with other units.

 

“We want Cambridge IVF to be unique in its patient focus, offering a truly personal service tailored to each individual’s particular circumstances. In addition, our links with Addenbrooke’s, the university, and the Cambridge Biomedical Campus mean we will be able to offer advice and treatment based on good-quality evidence and our knowledge of the very latest research.

Stephen Harbottle, lead embryologist, said: “Our aim is to ensure we provide high quality, patient-focussed care which is backed by the highest possible standard of laboratory services.

 

“As a team, we will keep our fingers on the pulse of new developments, carefully evaluating new treatment options, culture media, equipment and techniques to ensure the services we provide give our patients the best possible chance of becoming pregnant.
