New Year honour for Richard Howe

16 December 2011

Richard Howe, retired executive director at Cambridge University Hospitals (the NHS trust that includes Addenbrooke’s and the Rosie), has been recognised in the New Year honours with an MBE for services to the NHS.

Richard Howe

An electrical engineer by profession, Richard started his NHS career at the Mill Road maternity hospital in Cambridge. This was followed by 36 years of outstanding achievements as he took responsibility for running complex building projects and the management of ‘hotel’ services for Addenbrooke’s Hospital - one of the largest hospitals in the country. He led innovative projects such as the combined heat and power gas turbine, the first of its kind in the NHS; the design and installation of the waste recovery plant; and the creation of an 'airport' style shopping and restaurant concourse.

Speaking about the announcement Dr Gareth Goodier, CUH chief executive, said: "This is a proud moment for all who know and admire Richard. He has given Addenbrooke's and the NHS excellent service over more than three decades and is a worthy recipient of this honour."
