Addenbrooke's Abroad

Sharing our skills overseas

Gentleman in turban

Addenbrooke’s Abroad supports staff in sharing their skills and experiences with hospitals abroad, particularly those in developing countries, and works to ensure that staff, patients and students at CUH and at overseas institutions benefit from the increased expertise and understanding that is gained from global health partnerships and links.

Addenbrooke's Abroad is part of Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust, the registered charity for Addenbrooke’s and the Rosie.

Our aims are achieved by staff giving their time and expertise - voluntarily and in their own time, or as part of the voluntary release scheme or their professional development leave.

Addenbrooke's Abroad aims to:

  • Establish or strengthen partnerships (links) where we believe we can support effective change, and to coordinate the provision of effective long-term support and training that is sustainable and responsive to the defined needs of the partner institution.

  • Promote and support CUH staff and students to make practical contributions in health systems across the developing world.

  • Provide a focus for healthcare-related work undertaken overseas by Cambridge University Hospitals and Clinical School staff and facilitate effective sharing and dissemination of the benefits of global health work.

"Links allow NHS staff to contribute to the improvement of healthcare worldwide, whilst continuing to serve their own communities. Links motivate staff, enlarge their experience, sharpen their skills and thus help to retain them within each country's National Health Service: the benefits are clearly felt by both English and overseas partners."

Sir Nigel Crisp

Former Chief Executive for the NHS in England

"Health links between the UK and less developed countries provide the opportunity for strong and sustainable partnerships to improve international health and strengthen capacity of healthcare organisations. They provide individuals with inspiration and new perspectives that can profoundly benefit personal and professional development."

No NHS resources will be committed to Addenbrooke's Abroad. All who can pay their own costs will be expected to do so, but some funding will be needed to support those who cannot.
