Chaplaincy

Cambridge University Hospitals

The chaplaincy team

In a modern NHS Foundation Trust, chaplains work alongside patients, staff and relatives within the whole hospital community and for a variety of reasons.

Meet the team

The chaplains are members of staff employed by the Trust to care for the pastoral and spiritual needs of the whole hospital community.

For patients and their relatives

Coming into hospital can be an anxious time. Chaplains are available to meet with, to be with, to listen or to talk things through with patients and their families. We also provide the opportunity for individual prayer and communion for patients on the war or for representatives of other faith communities to visit as appropriate.

Staff support

We offer pastoral care and support to all members of staff and their families. This is a unique service offered to staff from all disciplines.

About chaplaincy at CUH

Services and prayers in the chapel

The hospital chapel is in the main concourse area. It is a multi-faith space open for anyone to use day or night, and is used regularly by patients, relatives/carers and staff as a place of quiet, prayer and reflection.

Muslim prayers

There is an area specifically for Muslim prayers in the chapel, with prayer mates, a Qibla locator and a copy of the Quaran. Washing facilities are available in the foyer restroom.
Jummah: Fridays 13.15

Roman Catholic practices

Our chaplaincy team is ecumenical and Roman Catholic members include a priest, a deacon, two religious sisters and several lay assistant

Other faiths

The chaplains and the chaplaincy office have good contacts for our local multi-faith community. Please let us know if you'd like us to arrange a visit for yourself or for a relative.

Remembrance books in the chapel

There are three books of remembrance kept in the chapel: one is for members of staff who have died, one is for babies and one for children who have died whilst being cared for in the hospital

History of chaplaincy

When the NHS was established in 1948, it was central to the ethos that the hospital authorities should give special attention to provide for the spiritual needs of both patients and staff as part of their overall healthcare.
