As a healthcare assistant, maternity care assistant or a theatre support worker you will be a valued member our healthcare team, assisting registered nursing and midwifery staff to promote our kind, safe and excellent values when caring for our patients.

 

As the healthcare assistant role requires you to be able to communicate effectively with patients, visitors, and other staff, as well as being able to understand and record patient data and notes, it is important that you have a good level of English literacy and numeracy skills. Therefore, before applying for a HCA position you will be required to pass simple literacy and numeracy screening.

What will my duties and responsibilities be?

Your clinical tasks will depend on the area you are working in, but will include the following:

  1. Accurately and promptly carrying out the tasks you have been asked to do by the registered nursing staff on your ward.

     

    These tasks will include:

     

    • cleaning and preparing beds for patients
    • ensuring that the clinical areas is always kept clean and tidy

     

     

  2. Caring for each individual patient in a way that makes them feel dignified and respected.

     

    This will include:

     

    • bathing patients
    • helping patients move about
    • helping patients eat and drink, or feeding those that are not able to do so
    • escorting patients to other clinical departments

     

     

  3. Obtaining and analysing specimens and performing and reporting regular clinical patient observations.

     

    These tasks include:

     

    • taking patient temperatures
    • checking patient pulse rates and blood pressure
    • measuring patients
    • checking urine, stool and sputum specimens
    • reporting any changes to a patient’s condition to registered staff

     

     

  4. Watching, listening, communicating and supporting.

     

    This will include:

     

    • helping patients as well their families and friends who are distressed or need information or support
    • sharing appropriate information with the rest of your healthcare team

 

 

 

What qualifications do I need to apply for an HCA/MCA/TSW position?

You do not need any formal qualifications to be a healthcare assistant. However, you will be expected to have an appropriate level of literacy and numeracy and effective verbal and non-verbal communication skills.

What are my terms and conditions as a healthcare assistant?

  • Salary:  Band 2  £13,653 - £16,753 pro rata
  • Hours of duty: 37.5 per week
  • Annual leave: 27 days* on appointment, plus general public holidays
  • Pension scheme: A 6% contribution will be deducted automatically unless you opt out of the scheme. Further details are available from Payroll Services.

Working as an HCA for Staff Bank Services

Working as an HCA for the Staff Bank allows you to experience shifts in different wards and clinics in the hospital. Candidates must be able to commit to working at least 3 shifts a week (on week days) as well as attending an 8 day induction programme. Shift patterns include earlies, lates and night shifts. Benefits include:
