Frequently asked questions

Work experience

I am from a local school - will I automatically get a work experience placement?

Placements are only offered to Cambridgeshire schools and colleges. You must declare your interest in a placement at CUH by speaking to your school/colleges careers representative.

I am not yet 16 but know already that I want to be a doctor, is there any chance that I could work with patients?

For your health and safety students under 16 years of age cannot work in clinical or medical areas or alongside clinical staff nor handle patient notes. For details on what placements are available to you, see the What's on offer? page.

What will my working day look like?

See the What's on offer? page for an example of a work experience timetable. As a general guide your working hours will be 09:00 – 17:00 with a 30 minute lunch break.

Will my travel and food be paid for?

Due to the large number of students carrying out work experience at CUH and our continued commitment to patient care we are unable to fund work experience students for travel and food.

Can I change the location of my placement if I do not like it?

If you have problems with your placement you must speak to your mentor or the work opportunities team. Only under unusual circumstances will you be able to move to a different department. Please be sure to complete your application form fully and give as much information as possible, as this enables us to find you an appropriate department.

What should I wear?

The hospital operates a dress code policy which states that employees must wear smart ‘business’ attire, for example, clean and ironed shirt or blouse, smart trousers and sensible shoes. Stiletto heels are not suitable. For women, the shoulders must be covered up so ‘spaghetti strap’ vest tops are not allowed.

If you have any body piercings on show (e.g. eyebrows, lips, nose) you will need to remove these before you come to work.  Similarly any tattoos on show must be covered up.

Can I use my mobile phone at work?

Mobile phones can only be used in certain areas of the hospital and you may only use your mobile phone in designated areas whilst you are on break away from you work area. You may not use your phone whilst working on front line areas such as reception desks.

Where can I buy lunch?

The food court located next to the main hospital reception has a variety of different food outlets; Burger King, Upper Crust, Go Potato, spice of Life and Costa coffee.  There are also two Amigo’s convenience stores.

Can I park my car on site?

Due to the high demand for staff car parking spaces, students may not park on site.  Car users are advised to use the Park & Ride at Trumpington or Babraham Road.
