‘You made a difference’ award winners

Winners and nominees: April 2009

Yvonne Sangster

Yvonne, bereavement co-ordinator in maternity services, has been at the Trust for almost 30 years (she'll celebrate this milestone this October); with 22 of these years spent working in bereavement care. A truly deserving winner, Yvonne was nominated for this award as she always gives 150% in her work and goes above and beyond what is expected. Yvonne always offers caring and sympathetic advice at what is a very difficult time for parents and families and even goes out of her way to visit some families at their homes if they are too bereaved to come back into the hospital.

"Winning this award means so much. I'm part of a great team; working with pathology, chaplaincy and councillors to make difficult experiences for parents more bearable. I've always felt well supported by my team and by the Trust, and together with the support of the families makes my job manageable and very rewarding."

Karen Brogan

Karen is also a long-standing member of the Trust having worked here for 11 years, working as a nutrition assistant on ward G4 since 2003. "I feel very proud to have won this award - it's a great feeling to know that the work I do is greatly appreciated by the staff I work with and the patients I look after. I love my job as the satisfaction it gives me when I am able to get a patient to start eating again is so rewarding.  But, I couldn't have done it without all the staff on G4 as we all work incredibly well as a team."

Mark Cubbitt, Senior Clinical Nurse on G4, added, "It a real pleasure working with Karen as she is so engaging with the patients and is always looking for ways to improve the service she provides. Over the years she has helped develop a photo menu for DME patients and continues to strive to develop nutrition work in this area of medicine. We are all delighted that she has won this award as she thoroughly deserves it."
