You made a difference: August award winners

August 2009

43 members of staff have been nominated this month.

This month's winners are:

Emily Wiltshear

Occupational Therapist – Neurosciences, Occupational Therapy

This is the second month in a row that a member of the Occupational Therapy team has won the You Made a Difference award. It suggests that this is a department that truly embodies the Trust's values: kind, safe and excellent.

Emily joined the Trust in June 2008 as a Specialist Occupational Therapist in Neurosciences. She was nominated by several colleagues, whose comments included:

  • "Emily is an inspiration to the Occupational Therapy department."

  • "She is dedicated, hardworking, patient-focused and actively involved in promoting the role and importance of OT."

  • "I value her as a colleague."

  • "Regardless of how busy she is, she always has time to support her colleagues."

Sue Bursnall, Occupational Therapy Manager, adds: "Emily is dedicated to her patients and provides them with a quality service. She has worked hard since starting with us last June to learn the new systems and processes required."

Renny Talbot

Chief Technologist, Maxillofacial Laboratory

Renny has been employed with the Trust since 2003 and works in the Maxillofacial laboratory as Chief Maxillofacial Technologist and Lead Orthodontic Technologist.

This department enhances patients' lives by creating, designing and engineering replacement parts of the body that have been lost through illnesses such as cancer or diabetes, including toes, eye sockets, nipples, ears or metal plates for the skull.

Renny was nominated for the award by Jim Shephard, father of patient Sam, and Clarinda Joy, a colleague.

Clarinda explains: "Renny was asked to come up with a device that would lift the scalp to take pressure off the brain of a patient who was bedridden and couldn't speak, eat or drink. Within one hour of fitting this device, the patient was speaking to his fiancee for the first time in weeks. He then trained the family how to use the device so that the patient could go home for the weekend."

After having to postpone his wedding twice, Sam Shephard is now well enough to resume preparations for his big day.

Mr Shephard explains what a difference Renny made to his family and Sam: "It was about superb care and engineering skills getting our son back in the 'land of the living'. Renny's concern and support both in and out of the hospital have been beyond anything we could reasonably expect. He has been of immense value to our family - and especially Sam, our son."
