Gemma Starling, play specialist on F2
Christine Baines, Therapeutic Play Manager, said: "Gemma has worked really hard to develop the service, not only for the children and teenagers coming here but also their families. As a manager I'm extremely proud of what she has achieved."
Gareth Goodier, Chief Executive, told Gemma: "This is not the only month you've been nominated – in fact, it's the sixth time. It's absolutely remarkable for somebody to get this many nominations, and the fact that you've had three from colleagues and three from patients' relatives shows how much your work is appreciated."
Some of the comments included: "She is fantastic with our child and really cares" and "she made my brother feel special". One colleague commented that thanks to Gemma's therapy, "many of our young patients were able to get through their treatment without sedation".
Meryl Moore, Head of Children's Nursing, praised the work of the entire play therapy team over the course of a challenging past six months. "Gemma is very well regarded and respected. She is always happy and smiling, and the parents and children adore her. This award is very well deserved."
In receiving her certificate, Gemma said: "When I found out I'd won, to be honest I was very shocked because I couldn't do my job without all the members of the team. The nurses really respect what we're doing here."
Gemma Starling receives her award from Dr Goodier
Graham Brown, porter in the EAU department.
His manager, Barry Chandler, said: "When the call came to say that he had won, we thought out of all the team Graham would be one of the most deserving, because of his attitude. We're always talking about the Trust's values of kind, safe, excellent, but for Graham this just comes naturally."
Graham was nominated by his colleague, Libby Parkes, who said: "Every day, Graham has a smile on his face. Even though the pressure of working in A&E is high, I never hear him complain. He's a shining example of what we should be like at work – he's an ideal employee who just gets on with the job."
Graham thanked Libby and the EAU team for all their support: "You make it a happy place to work and makes it easier to do our job."
