You made a difference: June award winners

20 June 2009

43 members of staff were nominated this month.

This month's winners are:

Paul Potter

Paul is a volunteer on the Intermediate Dependency Area on Ward D7. He has been volunteering for at the hospital since 1993, after a long career as a Scientific Officer for Agricultural Research within the Ministry of Agriculture. Last year Paul collected his 15 year volunteer service award. The staff on ward D7 say that they don't know how they would manage without him. He is always happy to help out, he is a huge part of the team and they miss him greatly when he is off on his trips to Germany. Paul was nominated for this award as he always comes into work when he is available, makes everyone laugh, and is always willing to run errands for staff on the ward.

Suzanne Rigby-Jones, our voluntary services manager, says how grateful they all are to Paul for the time he gives so freely to us, it is very much appreciated.

Edson Bentley

Edson is a staff nurse on ward C7. He was nominated for this award by a patient for the following reason: "I am only 16 but I had major surgery to remove part of my bowel due to the severity of my Crohn's disease. After my operation I was so scared to eat as before it had caused me such severe pain and sickness. I was really upset and scared and Edson came over whenever I was upset to listen and chat to me, to let me know that it would be okay. He completely understood how I was feeling and showed such care and compassion. He also always made me smile and laugh which was such a help and has really honestly changed my life and inspired me to become a doctor." Edson's manager Sarah Chaney says "he's amazing".
