You made a difference: October award winners

October 2009

Debbie Jankowski, Glaucoma Specialist Nurse, Clinic 3

Debbie started at the Mill Road Maternity Hospital in 1979 and has worked for the Trust ever since, joining the Ophthalmology department in 1996 and being appointed as glaucoma specialist nurse in 2006.

Debbie is heavily involved in Vision 2020 through the Addenbrooke's Abroad programme, which gives nursing support to help reduce blindness in Botswana.

She was nominated for this award by Mrs Nunne, a glaucoma patient who wrote to thank Debbie for the kindness and concern she showed to her after she failed to arrive for her appointment.

Debbie took the trouble to contact Mrs Nunne to check that she was OK, as it was unlike her to miss an appointment. Not only did she do this but she re-arranged her appointment for the following week, during her own lunch break.

Mrs Nunne writes: "My transport didn't show up the first time and was late the second time and Debbie was so concerned for the double stress I had suffered. I am so thankful for her kindness. She so obviously loves her work!"

Consultant opthalmologist Keith Martin said: "Debbie has a job description... but then there's the work that Debbie actually does. In this case, there was a problem with transport. She sorted it out, then saw Mrs Nunne in her lunchbreak without saying anything to anyone. She is the first point of contact for all our glaucoma patients, and it really makes an enormous difference.

"Among the work she does is education and awareness, talking to patients, as well as getting the patient support group up and running. When we had patients from Botswana come visit us in Cambridge, she hosted them in her own home and looked after them. Debbie is a model for others in putting patients first, and making them the centre of everything that's done here in the Eye Clinic."
