You made a difference: April award winners

April 2010

This month, 40 nominations were considered for the YMAD award.

The winners:

Alison Ous, staff nurse, C6

Alison received two nominations: one from a patient on her ward and another from the patient's husband.

The patient said: "Alison went beyond the call of duty when she stayed with me after her shift. She talked and calmed me down when I was feeling very depressed. She was fantastic and very caring. She stood up for me when I couldn't bring myself to tell my husband or other staff how I was feeling. Alison really deserves this award for all her hard work and for the compassion that she shows to all of her patients."

On receiving her award, Alison said: "This is not just for me - the whole team is really supportive and we all go out of our way to look after our patients in every way, so I'd like to accept this on behalf of C6."

Georgey Abraham, staff nurse, Emergency Department

In the past few months, Georgey has received a total of nine nominations from both patients and their relatives. Their comments include:

  • Georgey made me feel relaxed and calm
  • Georgey was kind and gave great care to my elderly mother
  • He explained everything in detail and nothing was too much trouble
  • Georgey was very reassuring, informative and kind to my husband
  • He has very good communication skills and always smiles

All nominations focus of Georgey's kindness and/or his excellent communication skills – all of which are Our Way values. Dr Sue Robinson, Clinical Director of ED, said: "It's no surprise that we're here today for this award, Georgey, because you're always kind and caring. You're an inspiration to all of us."

On accepting his award, Georgey said: "I've got an excellent team and line manager. I came to this acute setting straight from a job in a nursing home, so it could have been difficult. But they gave me an opportunity, and we all support each other. I want to thank my family who are here today and I'm very proud of Addenbrooke's and my team."
