You made a difference: January award winners

January 2010

This month 63 members of staff were nominated.

The winners:

Ross Stone, Staff Bank receptionist, Clinic 1

Ross joined the Staff Bank in June 2007 and worked at the Trust during the holidays from studying criminology at Leicester.

Since June 2009, Ross has been full-time on placements from the Staff Bank, based mostly in Clinic 1. He has very quickly became a valued member of staff and interacts well with staff and patients alike.

Ross was nominated by Kim Clark, PALS Manager: "Clinic 1 is a very pressured environment and I think that Ross manages the reception desk incredibly well. He is always polite and apologetic when patients are delayed and seems to be juggling a variety of different job."

Kim also gave an example of Ross's patience, sensitivity and respect for others when she observed the way in which he dealt with a patient who had a bad stammer. Despite the long queues and a constantly ringing telephone, she said that Ross manages to remain calm and professional.

Ross said: "The best thing about this job is that you're providing a service. I'm a people person, and it can be quite a torrid time coming to the hospital. To have somebody willing to run around and help out is important. I just think, 'How would I like to be treated?' "

Julie Chapman, Staff Bank manager, said: "Ross clearly understands and upholds the Trust's values, and we are extremely proud of the recognition Ross has received, which he fully deserves."

Colin Gardner, prosthetic and orthotic technician, Clinic 9

Colin has worked for the Trust for 17 years and designs, manufactures and repairs upper limb prosthetics. He sees many patients time and again as part of the rehabilitation process, and in accepting the award paid tribute to his Clinic 9 colleagues Lynn and Sarah, adding: "I always tell people I've got the biggest shed in Cambridge. I don't have a job - Addenbrooke's is my hobby!"

He was nominated by Mr Hallsworth, a patient who chose Addenbrooke's because of its track record in arm prosthetics. A very keen gardener, shortly after he had bought his dream retirement property, Mr Hallsworth was admitted to another hospital for a septic finger. The unhappy end result was having to have an above-elbow amputation of his left arm. "I was in despair at the prospect of never being able to continue my retirement passion of developing and maintaining my large, 1.3-acre garden."

But once he met Colin, and passed the "entrance examination" - "Colin said, 'I think we should treat him!' - they set about designing a special prosthesis that was stable and functional rather than cosmetic. The result was a series of tools that could be slotted into the prosthetic - garden hook or forks, for example and enable Mr Hallsworth to continue to do what he loves most: "messing about" in the garden.

"It's made a huge difference to my life; 18 months ago I thought I'd never be able to garden again, but now, with Colin's constant help, I hope to do even more!"

Colin's manager, Charlie Hoctor, said that Colin quietly gets on with his work and is always very helpful and flexible when required.
