You made a difference:
October award winners

October 2010

This month the judging panel received the 1,000th nomination since the awards were launched in March 2009. There were 63 nominations considered in October for the You Made a Difference award.

The winners were Jo Fielden, Medical Secretary, Medical Secretaries' Office, Cambridge Eye Unit and Senior Sister Claire Cowling from ward D6 Haematology.

Jo Fielden

Jo joined the Trust in 2005 and is responsible for administering all aspects of the Age-Related Macular Degeneration service within the ophthalmology department. This includes tracking patients' treatment pathways and organising dates for both outpatient and inpatient procedures. She also provides medical secretary support for the Medical Retina service.

She was nominated by her colleague Linda Proctor who described Jo as her 'role model'. In her nomination she said: "It never ceases to amaze me in our working day how calm and professional Jo always seems to be in what I perceive to be the most difficult and demanding secretarial role in Ophthalmology. She never gets flustered and treats patients and colleagues with the utmost respect even though she has a really heavy workload."

Jo's line manager, Jan Munro, and her manager Rose Ewans fully support Jo's achievement and said she regularly goes 'the extra mile' to provide a personalised service for patients.

Claire began her career with CUH in 2003 as a junior sister on C10. Following promotion to Senior Sister in 2008, she was greatly involved in the final decisions and preparations for the opening of Ward D6 Haematology and was instrumental in building the nursing team.

She received two nominations from colleagues including one from Junior Sister Jo Harris on behalf of the whole nursing team. Claire was described as a 'brilliant manager' who is 'always professional, encouraging, positive and a great role model'.

Jo said: "She has recently supported all of her staff to cope with some challenging issues, putting staff before herself and ensuring patients' safety and excellent standards of care are maintained."

Claire's dedication to her staff was recognised by Helen Oakley, SCN, Oncology who said: "Claire has great integrity, is well liked and more importantly well respected by her colleagues and patients. The nursing team are extremely loyal to her and always work very hard to deliver what she asks of them."
