The Rosie Hospital
This month, 57 nominations were considered for the YMD award.
The winners were Kate Bowers, Assistant Practitioner, Radiography and Carl Carter, HCA on D10.
Kate Bowers
Kate joined CUH in 2003 and was nominated by colleague Emma Skinner who decided it was time to bring Kate's good work to the attention of the YMD panel.
"There is not just one action that made a difference where Kate is concerned. All of her actions are full of thought and care for the patient she is seeing," says Emma.
"One particular occasion happened just a few weeks ago; an elderly lady had been bought in by taxi from her GP for an x-ray after a fall. Unfortunately this lady did have a fracture, but before Kate personally took the patient down to A & E to be seen by a consultant, she first helped the patient with ringing her son to inform him of what was going on, so that he wasn't waiting at home worrying about his mother.
"This was just one of many kind acts Kate does and I (and the department) always see her with a smile on her face and willing to help out, which makes all the difference to patients and staff alike."
Carl Carter
This is the second time Carl has been nominated since he joined CUH in July 2008 as a Health Care Assistant on ward D10.
This nomination came from the family of a patient who Carl had looked after for much of her three month stay before she passed away. The family were impressed with the care and attention given by everyone on D10 and especially by Carl. They say he combined efficiency with great gentleness not only to the patient but to all of the family.
Carl's manager, Donna O'Donovan said, "Carl is a hardworking, valuable member of the ward team who thoroughly deserves this award as he shows kindness and compassion to all and will try to help whenever he can.
