Her nomination, received from student nurse Alena Dzambikova, was read out by Ruth Murphy, director of communications: "I would like to nominate Linda for her outstanding role as a mentor. She has shown great dedication to students by always 'going that extra mile', and has been an exceptional role model by always being kind and compassionate. She has given me lots of inspiration and knowledge in transition to become a good staff nurse."

Also singing her praises was senior sister Michelle Reeve, who commended Linda on her calm and kind approach to patients, and revealed that "she has recently won Mentor of the Year award, which just demonstrates her commitment to her role as mentor."

On accepting the award, Linda said, "I'm absolutely thrilled and overwhelmed. I am doing a job that I really love, and I especially enjoy working with students to invest in their futures."

Clarence Yapo

Clarence, a staff nurse in the Programmed Short Stay Unit, has received four nominations since the You Made a Difference awards began.

Two of these nominations were received from his colleague Paul Moore, and from Mrs Davies, following her husband's visit to PSSU. Paul commented that "Clarence is an exceptional staff nurse. He always puts his patients first and has very high standards of what needs to be done to ensure the best patient outcomes."

Read by Ruth Murphy, the nomination from Mr and Mrs Davies said: "Having had more experience of hospitals than I would wish – it has been so refreshing to meet Clarence. He is genuinely warm, kind and his treatment is of first class professionalism. Clarence is deeply caring and loves to help others and so ensures his patients get the highest standard of care possible. A truly excellent nurse!"

On receiving his award, Clarence thanked those who had spoken highly of him and declared winning "a wonderful experience. I feel blessed and touched to realise that someone outside my own little world thinks I am special. I am greatly honoured and will treasure this award for the rest of my life.

"I do take pride in caring for my patients with the highest commitment. When patients come into my care, I can't always make them feel good but instead I can make them feel better by giving emotional support and encouragement. To be a good nurse is a calling."

Clarence also spoke of his gratitude to his colleagues, thanking them for their support and kindness. "It's been a pleasure working in this world-class university hospital, especially with those people I have worked with over the past twelve years. They are like my family and I am very proud to be a part of Addenbrooke's hospital."
