Vicky joined CUH five years ago as a Health Care Assistant in DME, and has spent the last three years in Acute Medicine for the Elderly.

She has successfully undertaken her NVQ level 2 and 3 HCA training and is responsible for delivering nursing care to a group of elderly patients under the guidance of trained nurses.

Vicky was nominated for the award by staff nurse Alison Cook who was impressed with Vicky's caring attitude towards an anxious patient.

The nomination read: "Vicky took her time to listen to him and reassure him and to contact the patient's son. Although it was busy, Vicky took this extra time to listen, even though she was helping two teams out who were short of one HCA. Vicky is always on hand to listen to patients, she remains sunny and professional as well as kind. She always goes beyond the call of duty for both her colleagues and patients."

Georgina Forbes, Vicky's manager, describes her as an 'excellent team member who is always very supportive of her work colleagues'.

She said: "Vicky is a hardworking and caring member of staff, who is always professional, organised and tries to maintain very high standards of care in often very busy and difficult situations."

Gavin Arbon

Gavin joined CUH as a HCA on Ward A4 in 2008. He performs all nursing duties with neuro patients and teaches specialling on corporate induction.

Ward clerk Carol Thurgood nominated Gavin for a YMD award for the caring way he dealt with a confused patient who had to be specialled. She told how Gavin treated the patient with 'great respect and dignity'. Staff found it difficult to calm the patient down when he was being transferred to another hospital so Gavin went with him even though his shift had finished.

Her nomination said: "I have seen examples of Gavin's kindness in all of the patients that he looks after. He has a great deal of patience and treats each patient as an individual, and an adult person."

At Gavin's presentation Senior Sister Nicola Owen praised Gavin's dedication to patients and their families. She said: "He truly deserves this award. He's the epitome of kind, safe and excellent. I'm proud to tell everyone he works on A4."

On accepting his award Gavin thanked his colleagues on A4 for being such a fantastic team to work with. Afterwards he said: "It's quite overwhelming to have won. I thought it was great just to be nominated. It's fantastic."

Gavin hopes to go on to do nursing and also has exciting times ahead in his personal life as he marries fiancee Katie in October.
