Radiotherapy treatment can involve daily or twice daily visits to the department spread over a number of weeks. You may be feeling overwhelmed by the prospect of daily travel from home and might like to consider staying in hostel accommodation on the Addenbrooke’s site.
What is hostel accommodation?
A number of rooms run by Sanctuary Housing are available for use by radiotherapy patients. The accommodation is situated in Elsworth House. Each self-contained flat contains 3 to 4 private bedrooms, a shower room, toilet and kitchen. Please note that there is one shower, toilet and kitchen per flat and these facilities are shared between the bedrooms. All flats and rooms are unisex and patients must be self-caring.
Do I have to pay for the accommodation?
No – hostel rooms are provided free of charge for oncology patients.
Can I bring someone else to stay with me?
Yes – you may bring one other person to stay with you during your stay in the hostel provided the hostel has availability. You will be allocated a twin room and your companion will also stay free of charge. Relatives or carers staying with patients who are under the age of 18 are required to stay with the patient at all times while on the hostel premises.
What are the rooms like?
The bedrooms are basic but comfortable. Each bedroom contains a bed(s), bedside table, chest of drawers or desk, chair, wardrobe, television and telephone.
Shared facilities
- Shower room – Large walk in shower cubicle with separate washbasin
- Toilet – Single toilet with washbasin
- Kitchen – Fitted kitchen with cooker, fridge, kettle, microwave and toaster. Lockable cupboards for food storage. Table and chairs.
- Iron and ironing board available on request.
- Washing machines are available in the basement (under Harston House and Granchester House. Please note they do not accept cash. You are required to pay via an App that you can load onto your smartphone.)
Housekeeping
Rooms are cleaned and bins are emptied daily. Linen and towels are changed weekly.
Is the accommodation secure?
Your key fob gives you electronic access to the main entrance of Elsworth House. The brass key will give you access to the front door of your flat and to your bedroom door. The front door and bedroom door are not self-locking so you will need to lock the doors behind you when leaving the flat. The silver key is for your kitchen cupboard should you wish to store food.
Is there disability access?
Elsworth house is an accommodation block with offices on the ground floor. There are five floors serviced by a lift and stairs. Oncology patients are usually accommodated on the 5th floor. For safety reasons you need to be able to ascend up to 5 flights of stairs in case of an emergency.
Can I access the internet?
All rooms are Wi-Fi enabled. There is no charge for internet access.
Can I smoke in the accommodation?
No – smoking is not permitted in or around the accommodation at all. Addenbrooke’s hospital is a NO SMOKING site.
How do I check in?
The radiotherapy administration team will help to co-ordinate the collection of your keys from the Granchester House Office, usually after 12:00 midday.
How do I check-out?
Check-out time is 11:00am. Keys can be returned directly to the Granchester House Office. Alternatively there is a red Key Drop Box located on level 2 (Ground floor) of Elsworth House next to the lift. Please DO NOT return keys to the hospital department.
Fire alarm
If you discover or suspect a fire, sound the alarm at the nearest break glass point. In the event of a fire alarm please make your way to the car park located at the front of the building using the stairs. DO NOT use the lift. Fire doors must be kept shut at all times.
Medical emergency
The accommodation is not part of the hospital premises and should you become unwell and require immediate medical attention, or in the event of an emergency, you should ring 9999 from the landline in your room, or 999 from your mobile phone.
Are there parking facilities?
Guests are advised to use the main hospital car park number 1. This is a multi-storey car park run by NCP. The radiotherapy or oncology department will stamp your parking ticket to authorise a subsidised rate. You will be able to convert your parking ticket to purchase a discounted weekly ticket at the car park office. Your weekly ticket may be used in any of the hospital car parks.

There is an Amigos newsagent and a sit down RVS café in the outpatients department and a further take away RVS café in Oncology.
Access to Cambridge city centre and Railway Station
Buses run frequently from the Addenbrooke’s bus station to the centre of Cambridge and Cambridge Railway Station. Journey times are approximately 5-10 minutes.
Repairs and maintenance
Please report faulty or broken items in your bedroom or flat to the Granchester House Office (01223 404 800). For out of hours emergencies (e.g. burst pipe) please contact the emergency maintenance team (0800 781 4812). Please ensure that you are present in your room/flat to allow access for the contractor.
Bedroom Telephones
The telephone in your room can receive all incoming calls but can only be used to dial out for internal extension numbers within the hospital. You are welcome to use a mobile phone in the accommodation.

Chaplaincy
The Chaplaincy Team is always available to provide pastoral care for all patients and families. They can assist patients and families to cope with the psychological, social and spiritual aspects of health, sickness and life issues, including death. They are also able to contact ministers from other faith groups on request. Their support is confidential, non-judgmental and available to all.
The chapel is located by the main concourse. The chaplains can be contacted during office hours 01223 217769. At all other times please call the hospital switchboard and ask for the ‘on-call’ Chaplain.
